Engineering 101: the Friday talks
Course structure
- Engineering 101 meets twice a week:
- ongoing team lab project(s);
- Friday guest talks.
- Lab projects are run entirely separately from Friday talks.
- Many students take Engineering 101 as part of FIWQS 100.26, the freshman
inquiry writing seminar for engineers.
- Friday talks:
- Hosted by Sam Fenster.
- Evaluation sheets give us
(the GSoE)
feedback about each talk. Turn them in at the end of class.
- They are also used to record your attendance, which will count toward
your final grade.
- Questions are encouraged at the end of each talk.
The talks
- Aug. 29th:
Sam Fenster,
on Computer Science & Computer Engineering.
- Sep. 5th: Prof.
Irven Rinard,
on the impact of science & technology on civilization; and on specialization
to different types of engineering.
- Sep. 12th: Prof.
Irven Rinard returns, to talk about chemical engineering's past, present
and future;
and uses it as an example of how engineering addresses problems
(energy and water) and is multi-disciplinary.
- Sep. 19th: Prof.
Maribel Vazquez
of Biomedical Engineering.
- Sep. 26th: A representative from the American Council of Engineering
Companies will talk about civil engineering — the subject and the
profession.
