COMPRESSION GROUP - PROJECTS
|
|
The NOAA/CREST compression group is developing robust, high performance algorithms
to compress data from NOAA sensors. Our current focus is to demonstrate algorithms with high
compression ratios and error robustness for imagers and sounders on the next generation
GOES-R platform. Since these instruments are still in the design phase we are analyzing proxy data to
build the algorithms and estimate their future performance with these instruments.
Project 1: Lossless Compression of Hyperspectral Data For the GOES-R sounder, we use AIRS as proxy data. For the sounder, a high compression rate has been achieved and this year we have focused on making this algorithm robust to errors in transmission. We have adapted state of the art turbo code based error correction methods to secure the data much more robustly by taking into account the compression structure.
Project 2: Lossless Compression of Imager Data For the GOES-R imager, we use ABI proxy data. We are taking a different approach than we took on the sounder to exploit the spatial coherence of the data, as is required by the future ABI relatively high spatial resolution. |
