Amount of Grant: $1,336,546
J. Barba, D. Troeger
Project Directors
The purpose of this grant was to increase the representation of minorities in academic research. The funded program, CMIPS, had as its two components a research activity (collaboratively based in Computer Science and Computer Engineering), and an educational activity whose purpose was to identify promising minority students early in their careers and encourage them, via a comprehensive program of challenge and support, to choose academic research careers. The grant provided stipends for undergraduate and graduate students for each year of its funding; in computer science, it supported 6 doctoral students with $15,000/year fellowships and 20 undergraduates with stipends ranging from $2000 to $6000 per year. It also funded a summer research activity at CCNY, which involved both doctoral and undergraduate students. In addition, the grant furnished laboratories in both computer science and electrical engineering: a 40-node Transtech transputer and 10 Sparcstations were acquired for computer science. The educational component for both computer engineering and computer science built on Troeger's approach to the first computer science course. The project concluded in August, 1997.
